Why Use a Gold Genie?
Gold shows always have spiral wheel concentrators on display. How often have you watched with fascination as the concentrates are dumped into the wheel and seconds later the gold appears in the spirals and drops into the center tube then falls into a pan.

For those of you that dredge or process a lot of black sand the choice for clean-up are limited to panning, using a micro-sluice, a centrifugal style bowl, or a spiral concentrating wheel.

After panning you will always end with black sand in the gold. The micro-sluices and small bowls work fine but are very slow and you will probably still end up with black sand in the gold. But with a good spiral wheel properly set-up you can process over 50 lbs. of black sand concentrates an hour with very little effort and have clean gold ready to sell.

So, if you mine gold and do not want to sit around for backbreaking hours panning and then picking out the black sand by hand you need to consider a spiral wheel.

To successfully get clean gold from a spiral wheel two things are necessary, a well designed high quality wheel, and the knowledge to operate it properly.

As a manufacturer of a gold spiral wheel I have been asked many times if my wheel is any good. My answer is always, "it is an excellent wheel but is limited by the skill of the operator." If you do not understand the principles of gravity separation, the importance of classification, and the proper operation of the wheel, your results will probably be disappointing.

Black sand concentrates are a combination of heavy minerals with magnetic iron usually being the main mineral. These minerals have a specific gravity in the 5 to 6 range. Gold has a specific gravity of 15 to 19.3 depending on its purity. The black sands will weigh 1/4 to 1/3 as much as the gold. A cubic foot of black sand will weigh about 225 lbs. Or 26.7 lbs. Per gallon. These heavy black sands present the major problem in gold recovery for recreational gold miners.

Gold with specific gravity of 15 to 19.3 and black sands at 5 to 6, properly screened to close to the same, size, will allow the gold to be easily separated using a good spiral wheel. Without screening particles many times the size of the gold will climb the spirals and disturb the concentrating action of the water and gravity. As the gold climbs up the spirals this disturbance causes small grains of black sand, along with the large pieces, to follow the gold up to the center tube and be deposited in the pan. The rule to follow is: ""he finer the gold the finer you want to screen your concentrates." With proper screening and operation it is possible to recover microscopic gold to 500 mesh with a good quality spiral wheel.
